05.08.2012 Sao Jorge – Pico – Sao Jorge

At 7:30 am the alarm clock woke me up, I casted an eye at Pico and he looked quite all right, so I made myself ready, took my packed backpack and went for breakfast. I only had time for an espresso, a cup of tea and some fruit salad, but prepared a couple of sandwiches for on the way and off I went. Just when I left the hotel, the shuttle bus was taking some guests to the harbour and picked me up! There I bought a return ticket to Sao Roque, Pico.

At 8:40 am we drove out of the harbor of Velas and at 9:15 am we arrived at Sao Roque. I took a cab to Casa da Montanha on 1230 m, which I reached at 10 am. There I first had another strong espresso, enrolled for the hike to Pico and ate my sandwiches while watching the security film...

I started to climb up with David and Erica from Boston at 10:30 am: Right from the beginning it was very steep, sometimes we had to pull ourselves up the cliffs on all fours! In addition, first it was very foggy and we were glad to be able to orientate ourselves towards the numbered white posts! After an hour I had to walk on in my pace in order to not tire out... and another half an hour later the sun finally had conquered the fog! The last bit up the nipple of Pico was a real challenge - I wondered how I would get back down here! At 1 pm after 2 1/2 hours and 1100 m I arrived at the summit of Pico. Unfortunately it was still foggy underneath so that I couldn't see any of the other islands... I sat on warm steams, talked to other climbers and waited until David and Erica arrived up there.

After a well deserved break on the highest point of Portugal I had to climb back down the homicidal vulcano: It was very, very steep and slippery on the loose lava pebbles! After half an hour descending I found myself in thick fog and followed the wrong of the hundreds of paths around the moss... suddenly I realized that I was lost because I couldn't spot any of the white posts anymore! I stood still for a moment and fortunately heard voices in the fog... I walked in direction of the voices and the people conducted me back to the trail. Then luckily the sun came back and I was able to be guided by the white posts again!

Sao Roque, Pico

Shortly before 4 pm I arrived back at the Casa da Montanha after a descend of 2 hours: Hence I coped the very demanding 7-hours hike in 4 1/2 hours! Renato, the mountain guide of a French group gave me a lift to Sao Roque. There at the harbor I met the Dutch-German couple to whom I had already spoken on the navigation coming here this morning... in the sun we exchanged our hike experiences, I went for a swim in the cool floods and then used the time waiting for the boat back to Velas preparing this post.

Pico, der steile Zahn, zeigte nochmals seine Brustwarze ; ) / Pico once again showed his nipple before I left ; )

After two glasses of Port wine at the harbour restaurant the ferry to Sao Jorge arrived at 8:30 pm, first discharged lots of passengers with instruments, suitcases and two scooters and then off we went direction Velas... At the harbour Nadine already awaited me and we walked to the restaurant Valense close-by. We were hosted very attentively by the owner, exchanged our news and were offered an orgasm at the end… What it was exactly? – I’ve got no clue, but it was green! ; )

04.08.2012 Sao Jorge: Velas

In the middle of the night we had a battle against mosquitos… I guess the cagarros had left some for us after all! ; ) Nevertheless we had a good and long sleep this night.

Breakfast this morning we had at 9:30 am together with Kees & Frank who were about to leave for the island of Sao Miguel. As forecasted it was cloudy today, that’s why we decided to spend a relaxing day around town (shopping). At 11 am we returned our Toyota Yaris to Auto Turista Sao Jorge and strolled along the coastal promenade into the centre of Velas. To be on the safe side, I asked about the opening hours on Saturdays in the first shop – the answer ‘until noon’ made us feel time-pressed as it was already 11:30 am! But soon after we had already checked out everything and left were the Chinese shops which only close at 7 pm… (Kees & Frank: We have to leave our brought clothes here to fit the new ones into our suitcases!) Along the way we also eyed upon restaurants which could be considered tonight and tomorrow night for dinner and we found two nice options! Before we walked back to the hotel we enjoyed a very good espresso and a fresh squeezed orange juice at the harbour bar. When returning to the hotel it started to drizzle…

An extended rest period in our hotel room – in spite of the most beautiful weather outside, but also our skin needs a recover from time to tome ; ) – was exactly what we needed! Maybe this will be the reason we won’t come back home not quite so stressed out from travelling? Anyhow, providently I packed my backpack for tomorrow to climb Pico!

This morning shortly after 8 am I went for a run back and forth the whole town of Vela between the two rocks under a cloudless sky. To crown it all, I went for a swim in one of the piscinas naturais where I was able to swim out of the rock fortress into the open Atlantic - just brilliant, and the water didn't feel as cold anymore!

When I arrived for breakfast at 9:30 am, Nadine had already almost cleared it off ; ) so I joined Kees & Frank at their table and because we lost in interesting conversations we hardly had time to eat! Thereafter our plan was relaxing and sun tanning at the pool...

At 4 pm we were ready to discover the rest of the island by our rental car and first drove along the south coast direction west. We headed for the most western point, Ponta dos Rosais, where in midst of the wild landscape only a veteran ugly lighthouse was awaiting us… Back along the north coast we stopped at the fairytale Parque das Sete Fontes and drove up Pico da Velha (493 m) to enjoy a breathtaking panorama.

Over a pass of 700 m we reached Urzelina on the south coast, where we finally found the belfry which stands in solidified lava since 1808 and which we were looking for since yesterday. Further we went direction east to Calheta to the restaurant Os Amigos, there dolphins were awaiting us for a starter – fresh as a daisy splashing about in the ocean –and thereafter a new species of grilled fish…

Pico am Morgen / in the morning

When we went for breakfast this morning at 9:30 am, Pico was almost without any cloud – another day in paradise announced itself! Yesterday evening we had reserved a car, which we went to pick up at Auto Turistica Sao Jorge just across the street from the hotel at 11 am. With our Toyota Yaris we first went to buy water and fruit for the day. Thereafter we paid SATA a visit to check our last chance for Corvo: There would be an ideal flight to Corvo from Horta and back tomorrow, but we wouldn’t make it with the boat connections… that’s why we definitively stroke it from our list now! : (

At noon we started our tour around the island along the south coast direction east… when we passed the restaurant Manezinho in Urzelina, we thought it would be a good idea to reserve a table for dinner tonight! We drove on through Manadas, Faja das Almas to Topo, the most eastern point of the island. On the way we met Kees & Frank, two Dutch teachers who also stayed at the Hotel Sao Jorge Garden, again and again at different miradouros. In Topo we all marveled at the Ilheu de Topo with Terceira and Graciosa in the background…

Thereafter we drove along the north coast and were speechless with amazement when we spotted Faja dos Cubres and Faja de Ouvidor – just breathtaking! By the way, faja means ‘fertile narrow strip of land underneath a cliff coast’in English, where bananas and coffee is grown! In Faja de Ouvidor we had a strong espresso at the restaurant Amilcar, which we considered to revisit for dinner one night… At 6 pm we arrived back at the hotel for a short time where I revised my pictures and wrote a bit for my blog.

Pico am Abend / in the evening

xxxFranziska & Nadine

At 8 pm we sat at our reseved table at the restaurant Manezinho, in Urzelina, and for once we ordered something different for dinner: Cataplana de Cherne com Camarao, a fish stew which didn’t taste bad at all, and the view to Pico included! As there was a music concert going on in town we decided to cast an eye at it as well…we had to wait an hour until the delayed band came on stage, but like this we had lots of time to study the crowd! After 3 songs we had seen and heard it… ; )
