Nach dem
Frühstück packten wir alles ein, was uns heute zu Nutzen sein könnte, und
trafen um 11 Uhr Darlene und Mauro im Dark Esplanada, die uns ihren Daihatsu
für 2 Tage übergaben. Ich ließ sie einen Zettel unterschreiben, der aussagt,
dass wir berechtigt sind mit ihrem Auto für 2 Tage auf der Insel herumzukurven
- nur so für den Fall, wenn wir in eine Polizeikontrolle kommen würden, was ich
mir zwar beim besten Willen nicht vorstellen kann! ; )
After breakfast we packed whatever we thought we could need today and met Darlene and Maura at 11 am at Dark Esplanada to take over their Daihatsu for 2 days. I let them sign an authorization that we were allowed to use their car for the next 2 days - just in case if we will be stopped by the police, you never know! ; )

Uhr starteten wir unsere Inselrundfahrt: Wie bereits gut einstudiert Nadine am
Steuer und ich an der Karte und Linse... Madalena befindet sich ganz im
Nordwesten von Pico und wir fuhren zuerst der Westküste entlang Richtung Süden
nach Criaçao Velha durch unser erstes Lavaweingebiet…
At 11:30 am we stated our tour around the island: As already well rehearsed, Nadine behind the steer and me behind the map and lens... Madalena is situated in the north west of Pico and we first headed direction south along the west coast to Criaçao Velha, through our first lava vineries…

Stunde später fuhren wir durch Sao João, wo wir das nette Restaurant
Marisqueira für heute oder morgen Abend vermerkten, eine Mühle passierten und
durch die Misterios fuhren - Lavaströme, die zu bizarren Gesteinsfelsen
erstarrten, heute aber mit Wald und Gebüsch bedeckt sind. Um 13 Uhr kamen wir
in Lajes do Pico an, wo wir tankten und die Pneus aufpumpen liessen! Danach
schlenderten wir durch das ehemalige Walfängerstädtchen, wo 1987 der letzte
Pottwal an Land gezogen wurde... Nach einem starken Espresso ging es weiter
nach Ponta da Ilha, östlichster Punkt mit Leuchtturm.
Half an hour later we drove through Sao Joao, where we spotted the nice
restaurant Marisqueira we intended go for dinner to tonight or tomorrow night. We
passed a mill and drove along some Misterios – lava flows which froze to
bizarre rock formations, but today are covered with trees and bushes. At 1 pm
we arrived at Lajes do Pico where we fuelled up and also pumped up the tires!
Thereafter we strolled along the ancient whale catchers’ town, where in 1987
the last sperm whale was reeled in… After a strong espresso we went on to Ponta
da Ilha, the most eastern point with a lighthouse.

Entlang der Nordküste bestaunten wir beim Miradouro Terra Alta (415 m) die ganze Insel Sao Jorge bevor wir um 16 Uhr Sao Roque do Pico erreichten. Hier fand dieses Wochenende ein Musikfestival statt, wo die vier Engländer (Coldplay Tribute Band), die wir am Freitag im Hotel getroffen hatten, ein Konzert gaben... aber eben, zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatten wir noch kein Auto! Viel los war im Städtchen nicht, so dass wir eine halbe Stunde später etwas weiter westlich an der Bucht von Furna de Santo Antonio bei den Piscinas Naturais unsere wohlverdiente Siesta abhalten konnten... Wie bestellt beglückte uns die Sonne und 2 Stunden später brachen wir auf Richtung Madalena.
Eigentlich hatten wir vor heute Abend im O Luis in Madalena essen zu gehen, das hatte aber eine geschlossene Gesellschaft, so beschlossen wir die 20 km weiter nach Sao João zu fahren und kamen um 20 Uhr im Restaurant Marisqueira an. Nach einem herrlichen Abendessen (wie fast immer: Salat, gegrillten Fisch mit Gemüse und einen Azoreanischen Weisswein) fanden wir den Abschluss unseres Abends (auch wie fast immer) im Dark Esplanada mit einem Portwein und viel Arbeit… ; )

Along the north coast at Miradouro Terra Alta (415 m) we enjoyed the sight of the entire island of Sao Miguel before we reached Sao Roque do Pico at 4 pm. Here there was a music festival going on this weekend where the four English boys (Coldplay Tribute Band), who we had met at the hotel Friday, had given a concert… unfortunately we didn’t have a car at that time! There wasn’t going on a lot now, so we drove on west and found the bay of Furna de Santo Antonio where we had a wonderful siesta half an hour later. As ordered, the sun came out… 2 hours later we took the road back to Madalena.
Actually we intended to have dinner at O Luis in Madalena tonight but it was closed due to a private function, that’s why we decided to drive on 20 km to Sao João and arrived at the restaurant Marisqueira at 8 pm. After a delicious dinner (like almost every evening: salad, grilled fish with vegetables and an Azorean white wine) we rounded up our evening (like almost always as well) at the Dark Esplanada with a Port wine and lots of work… ; )
