Pico am Morgen / in the morning

Heute Morgen als wir um 9:30 Uhr frühstücken gingen, war der Pico fast ohne Wölkchen – es kündigte sich ein weiterer Tag im Paradies an! Gestern Abend hatten wir uns noch ein Auto reservieren lassen, das wir um 11 Uhr gegenüber vom Hotel bei Auto Turistica Sao Jorge abholten. Mit unserem Toyota Yaris fuhren wir zuerst einmal zum Einkaufszentrum um das Nötigste für den Tag einzukaufen. Danach statteten wir der SATA einen Besuch ab um die letzte Chance für Corvo abzuklären: Es hätte zwar für morgen den idealen Flug nach Corvo ab Horta und zurück, aber mit der Schiffsverbindung klappt es nicht… also strichen wir es nun definitiv von unserer Liste! : (

When we went for breakfast this morning at 9:30 am, Pico was almost without any cloud – another day in paradise announced itself! Yesterday evening we had reserved a car, which we went to pick up at Auto Turistica Sao Jorge just across the street from the hotel at 11 am. With our Toyota Yaris we first went to buy water and fruit for the day. Thereafter we paid SATA a visit to check our last chance for Corvo: There would be an ideal flight to Corvo from Horta and back tomorrow, but we wouldn’t make it with the boat connections… that’s why we definitively stroke it from our list now! : (

Um 12 Uhr starteten wir unsere Inselrundfahrt der Südküste entlang Richtung Osten… als wir in Urzelina beim Restaurant Manezinho vorbeikamen, reservierten wir gleich einen Tisch für heute Abend! Weiter ging es durch Manadas, Faja das Almas und weiter an den östlichsten Punkt nach Topo. Unterwegs trafen wir an einigen Miradouros immer wieder Kees & Frank, zwei holländische Lehrer, die auch im Hotel Sao Jorge Garden wohnen. In Topo bestaunten wir gemeinsam die Ilheu de Topo mit Terceira und Graciosa im Hintergrund…

At noon we started our tour around the island along the south coast direction east… when we passed the restaurant Manezinho in Urzelina, we thought it would be a good idea to reserve a table for dinner tonight! We drove on through Manadas, Faja das Almas to Topo, the most eastern point of the island. On the way we met Kees & Frank, two Dutch teachers who also stayed at the Hotel Sao Jorge Garden, again and again at different miradouros. In Topo we all marveled at the Ilheu de Topo with Terceira and Graciosa in the background…

Danach fuhren wir an die Nordküste entlang und waren ganz still vor Staunen, als wir Faja dos Cubres und Faja de Ouvidor erblickten – einfach nur atemberaubend! Faja bedeutet auf Deutsch übrigens ‘fruchtbare schmale Landstreifen unterhalb der Steilküste‘, wo man Bananen und sogar Kaffee anbaut! In Faja de Ouvidor gönnten wir uns einen starken Espresso im Restaurant Amilcar, das wir uns als Abendessenvariante merkten… Um 18 Uhr waren wir dann kurz zurück im Hotel, wo ich meine Fotos bearbeitete (d.h. ansehen und auswählen!) und schon mal für meinen Blog schrieb.

Thereafter we drove along the north coast and were speechless with amazement when we spotted Faja dos Cubres and Faja de Ouvidor – just breathtaking! By the way, faja means ‘fertile narrow strip of land underneath a cliff coast’in English, where bananas and coffee is grown! In Faja de Ouvidor we had a strong espresso at the restaurant Amilcar, which we considered to revisit for dinner one night… At 6 pm we arrived back at the hotel for a short time where I revised my pictures and wrote a bit for my blog.

Um 20 Uhr kamen wir im Restaurant Manezinho, in Urzelina an und bestellten einmal etwas anderes als sonst: Cataplana de Cherne com Camarao, einen Fischeintopf, der gar nicht mal so schlecht schmeckte, und das mit Aussicht auf Pico! Da im Dorf noch ein Konzert stattfand, gesellten wir uns noch ins Getümmel… wir mussten eine glatte Stunde warten, bis die verspätete Band auftrat, hatten so aber viel Zeit die Leute zu studieren! Nach 3 Liedern hatten wir es gesehen und gehört… ; )

At 8 pm we sat at our reseved table at the restaurant Manezinho, in Urzelina, and for once we ordered something different for dinner: Cataplana de Cherne com Camarao, a fish stew which didn’t taste bad at all, and the view to Pico included! As there was a music concert going on in town we decided to cast an eye at it as well…we had to wait an hour until the delayed band came on stage, but like this we had lots of time to study the crowd! After 3 songs we had seen and heard it… ; )
