heute Morgen wieder ziemlich bedeckt war, beschlossen wir nach dem Frühstück
den Rest der Insel abzufahren. Zuerst begaben wir uns ins Städtchen Vila do
Porto, begutachteten alle Läden auf der Flaniermeile und reservierten einen
Tisch für heute Abend in der Churrasqueira O Pipas.
This morning it was quite overcast again, that’s why we decided after breakfast to drive around the rest of the island. First we went to the little town of Vila do Porto, walked along the strolling promenade throwing an eye into each and every shop and finally reserved a table at the Churrasqueira O Pipas.

Danach
ging es weiter an die Nordwestküste nach Anjos, wo einst Kolumbus an Land ging
und das eine hübsche Badeanlage aufzuweisen hat. Weiter ostwärts kamen wir an
der Wallfahrtskirche Ermida Nossa Senhora de Fatima vorbei, die 15 mal 11
Stufen hoch auf einem Hügel thront. Wir passierten den Miradouro Lagoinhas und
suchten schliesslich vergebens nach dem Leuchtturm in Ponta do Norte, am
nördlichsten Punkt von Santa Maria…
Thereafter we drove on to Anjos with its pretty pools on the north west coast, where once Columbus went ashore. Further towards east we passed the pilgrimage chapel Ermida Nossa Senhora de Fatima, which thrones 15 times 11 steps high on a hill. We took a picture at the Miradouro Lagoinhas and finally were looking in vain for the lighthouse at Punta do Norte, the most northern point of Santa Maria…

Um 14 Uhr
kamen wir in Cruz dos Picos an, wo angeblich ein Wanderweg hinauf zum Pico Alto
(587 m) führt… da es sich um eine gewöhnliche Strasse handelte, entschlossen
wir uns sie hoch zu fahren und uns die einstündige Wanderung zu ersparen!
Leider war es noch stets ziemlich bewölkt, so dass wir keinen klaren Rundblick
um die ganze Insel geniessen konnten… : ( Dafür entdeckten wir ein Mahnmal
eines italienischen Flugzeuges, das 1989 dort abstürzte.

zurück zur Siesta ins Hotel ging, besuchten wir das Hafenrestaurant in Vila do
Porto und genossen eine frische Melone… Im Hotel dösten wir am Pool und waren
echt froh, dass es bedeckt war, sonst hätten wir es sicher nicht ausgehalten
dort! Bevor wir uns für den Abend bereit machten, suchten wir den Jacuzzi auf.
Um 19:30 Uhr
betraten wir das moderne Restaurant der Churrasqueira O Pipas, das sehr gut
besucht war und mussten prompt eine Viertelstunde warten, bis wir bedient
wurden. Wir bestellten einen weiteren absolut unbekannten Fisch, der draussen
auf dem offenen Grill zubereitet wurde… Was es genau war? Keine Ahnung - aber gut!

At 2 pm we arrived at Cruz dos Picos where a hiking path was supposed to
lead up to the Pico Alto (587 m)… but it was nothing but an ordinary street so
we decided to drive up and save us the 1-hour hike! Unfortunately it still was
quite overcast, so we were not able to enjoy a clear view around the whole
island… : ( Instead we discovered a monument telling that an Italian plane
crashed here in 1989.
Before we went back to the hotel for a siesta, we had a nice and fresh
melon at the harbour restaurant of Vila do Porto… At the hotel we had a snooze
at the pool and were very happy that it was overcast, otherwise it would have
been just too hot there! Before we made us ready for the evening we hopped into
the hot jacuzzi.
At 7:30 pm we entered the modern restaurant Churrasqueira O Pipas which
was packed and we had to wait a quarter of an hour until we got served. We
ordered another absolutely unknown fish which was grilled outside on charcoal…
What exactly it was? – No idea - but delicious!
